Chiefly correspondence (1840-1874) of Francis Patrick MacFarland with priests of the Dioceses of New York and Hartford and with members of the American hierarchy. Also one letter written by John England, Bishop of Charleston (1830); one letter signed by Bishop William Tyler (1849); the manuscript of a lenten sermon by Bishop Tyler, written in 1841 and delivered in 1844 and 1848; other papers concerning Catholic affairs in the Diocese of Hartford (1874-1892); photographs and clippings, with information on St. Joseph Cathedral, destroyed by fire in 1957.

William Tyler (1806-1849), the first Bishop of Hartford, chose Providence as his city of residence. Francis Patrick MacFarland (1819-1874), pastor of St. John's Church in Utica, New York, served as the third Bishop of Hartford (1858-1874).
